Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund Endorses Joe Biden for President of the United States

Knoxville, Tenn. – The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund (SACEAF) is proud to endorse the candidacy of Joe Biden for President of the United States. This endorsement is based on former Vice President Biden’s stated positions on climate and energy issues, and campaign policy proposals including his:

  • Acceptance of the scientific reality of climate change and acknowledgment of the many threats it poses.
  • Build Back Better” plan, which aims to achieve economy-wide net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to decarbonize the power sector by 2035 with a technology-neutral “Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Standard.”
  • Commitment to environmental justice by calling for 40% of clean energy spending benefits to be directed to disadvantaged communities and ensuring investment in workers and communities impacted by the clean energy transition.
  • Proposal to invest $2 trillion to update our nation’s infrastructure; position the U.S. auto industry to be a global leader in electric transportation; transition 3 million vehicles in federal, state, tribal, postal, and local fleets; and set a goal that all new American-built buses be zero-emissions by 2030.
  • Plan for energy efficiency investments to retrofit 2 million homes and 4 million commercial buildings with energy upgrades; build 1.5 million energy efficient affordable homes and housing units, retrofit schools with energy efficiency and safety measures; and set a net-zero emissions standard for all new commercial buildings by 2030.
  • Acknowledgment of the risk of fossil fuel energy with a commitment to issue a moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters; limits on methane pollution for new and existing oil and gas operations; eliminate fossil fuel subsidies; and hold polluters accountable for the full cost of their carbon pollution.

“The science of climate change coupled with the unprecedented opportunity to accelerate the clean energy economy makes this election the most important of our lifetime,” said Dr. Stephen A. Smith, Executive Director of the SACE Action Fund. “Time is simply running out to address serious climate disruption: the impacts are appearing all around us and the choices in this election could not be more clear, that is why the SACE Action Fund is strongly endorsing the Biden/ Harris campaign. We ask that you join us in doing everything within your power to make sure we have leaders that will advance policies based on science that move us to a safer, more vibrant future.”

In addition to the climate-friendly policies a Biden administration would implement, the SACE Action Fund is confident a Biden Administration would appoint competent professionals, guided by science who are experts in their fields, to lead the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and other federal agencies. These government agencies play instrumental roles in our nation’s energy policy, protecting consumers, our environment, and our public lands. It is our sincere belief that leadership like this will be critical to getting our federal government back on track to confront the climate crisis.

Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund Endorses Roy Cooper for North Carolina’s Governor

Asheville, N.C. — The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund, which works to make clean energy solutions a top priority for our region’s elected leaders, announced today its endorsement for Roy Cooper’s candidacy for North Carolina’s Governor.

This endorsement is based in part on his proven track record and leadership on addressing climate change as Governor, specifically with Executive Order 80 which established measurable goals to reduce statewide greenhouse gas emissions and increase the number of registered, zero-emission vehicles.

We also applaud his support of HB 589 to promote more solar energy and his simultaneous executive order to encourage wind power development as both are important in shifting North Carolina away from polluting fossil fuel power.

Additionally, we appreciate his effective use of the Volkswagen settlement funds to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the state, his proposed EV tax credit for EV purchases, and his efforts to identify state fleet vehicles to be replaced with EVs. All of these will help to accelerate the adoption of EVs and thus reduce the use of carbon emitting internal combustion engine vehicles.

Most recently, we were very glad to see his Issuance of Executive Order 142 to prevent utility disconnections for nonpayment due to COVID-19 pandemic. This is an important move to help people already struggling during the pandemic, and maintain access to electricity, which is an essential human need.

These and other actions specifically focused on addressing climate change and promoting clean energy have exceeded the following Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund endorsement criteria:

• Does the candidate have a track record supporting clean energy and climate policies?
• Has the candidate utilized social media or been quoted by media expressing support for clean energy and climate change policies?
• Does the candidate’s website provide a statement in support of clean energy or climate change or list clean energy or climate action policies as a priority?

We wish Governor Cooper well in his campaign and thank him for consistent leadership on behalf of the citizens of North Carolina.

The Trump administration’s replacement rule does nothing to address this crisis or protect us, and it violates the Clean Air Act in the process,’ demonstrates his commitment to addressing the climate crisis in his capacity as North Carolina’s Attorney General,” stated Dr. Stephen Smith, executive director for the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund.

Knoxville, Tenn.  – The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Action Fund, which strives to support clean energy and climate solutions as a top priority for our region’s elected leaders, has endorsed Gloria Johnson’s candidacy for State House in District 13. In an effort to highlight Southeastern leaders who have demonstrated support for policies that limit greenhouse gas pollution and promote clean energy solutions, this endorsement comes during a vital time in the U.S. political arena as we strive to combat the worst impacts of climate change.
