2008 Clean Energy Candidate Endorsements

Challengers

President
Barack Obama - elected
: Obama's track record of consistently voting for clean energy in the US Senate coupled with his comprehensive energy platform detailing how he would reduce global warming pollution, break America’s addiction to oil while creating millions of new jobs makes him the clear choice as a president to lead our country into a clean energy future. US Senator Barack Obama's League of Conservation Voters lifetime scorecard average is 86%.

US Senate
Kay Hagan
(NC) - elected:  As a state senator, Hagan is a proven leader on energy and environmental issues and her comprehensive energy platform states “my plan is about more than renewable energy – it’s about renewing America to take on the economic, environmental, and national security challenges of the 21st Century.”  in 2007, Hagan strongly supported legislation to increase the use of solar energy and to require North Carolina utilities to produce 12.5% of their electricity through renewable sources by 2021.  State senator Kay Hagan's Conservation Voters of North Carolina lifetime scorecard average is 85%.

US House
Alan Grayson (FL-8) - elected:
Grayson has built his career around protecting taxpayers from poor oversight in government contracts, which is why he understands the needs to halt the tax breaks to oil companies raking in record profits.  Grayson pledges to "promote higher fuel efficiency standards, reward companies that create energy sources that are clean and renewable, and ban drilling for oil off Florida's coast" making him the obvious choice as a clean energy candidate to represent Florida's 8th district.

Raul Martinez (FL-21): Cuban-born Martinez served as the  mayor of Hialeah for nearly 25 years, one of 75 cities in Florida signed onto the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement.  Martinez affirms that “harnessing innovation will create the high-wage jobs of the 21st century” and criticizes his opponent for voting "to protect the interests of oil companies over consumers by voting in support of tax cuts for big oil while opposing efforts to bring relief on gas prices."

Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24) - elected: As a former state representative, Kosmas strengthened environmental protections in Florida.  As a candidate for Congress, Kosmas states that she will “fight for sustained investment in research and development to create cutting-edge, sustainable energy alternatives that capitalize on America's vast renewable natural resources, ingenuity, and workforce." State representative Suzanne Kosmas' Florida League of Conservation Voters lifetime scorecard average was 76%.

Joe Garcia (FL-25): Energy is one of the top 10 issues that Garcia campaigns on and his energy platform states it is, "important that we develop a comprehensive long-term plan for energy independence that will counter the failed policies of the past."  During a recent debate, Garcia stated, "if we do nothing (about global warming) in 30 years we may be knee deep in water."

Larry Kissell (NC-08) - elected: As a former textile worker who's job was shipped overseas, Kissell clearly understands how a new national energy policy will reduce global warming pollution while bringing thousands of new ‘green collar’ jobs to revitalize the economy of North Carolina.  Kissel declares that we must: “secure our future with home grown, alternative, renewable energy sources rendering us both secure and the world leader in energy production.”

Daniel Johnson (NC-10):  As a decorated veteran, Johnson has first-hand knowledge how “energy independence is an economic issue, a security issue, and a moral issue."  Part of his campaign platforms strives to, "encourage the production and viable use of renewable resources that will drive down gas prices, secure our nation, create jobs, and protect our natural resources.”

Georgia Public Service Commission
Jim Powell
:  As a former senior official with the U.S. Department of Energy with more than 20 years experience in federal energy policy and programs, Powell is among the most experienced candidates in years to vie for a PSC Commissioner post in our region. Powell maintains he will "continue to promote energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy resources and encourage the state’s investor-owned utilities to diversify the fuel sources they use to generate electricity."
